Ten melodies, some only singular stanzas, are attributed to the Alter Rebbe as having been composed by him.

Those attributed to the Mitteler Rebbe were composed in his time and sung in his presence, but he did not compose them.

He had a group of musically-gifted young men known as "the Mitteler Rebbe's kapellye," divided into two groups, vocalists (Baalei Shir) and musicians who played various instruments (Baalei Zimra).
